Mobile Food Vending Signs Go Up Around Fountain Square

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - It’s official.  Signs to allow mobile food trucks to do business around Fountain Square went up Friday afternoon on Vine Street.

A couple vendors were already taking advantage of the new arrangement Friday.  Council voted unanimously last month to expand the mobile food vending program created by Council Member Laure Quinlivan to the Fountain Square area.

“This is a great example of streamlining government and moving quickly to make this happen so downtown holiday shoppers can try the great food offered by our mobile vendors,” says Quinlivan.  “I give a special thanks to restaurant and business owners near the square who overwhelmingly supported this expansion, instead of viewing it as competition.”

The idea has been endorsed by Fountain Square restaurant managers at Morton's and Via Vite, although they may not face too much competition from the truck and trailer-based vendors.  Macy's has also

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Cincinnati City Council will recognize the volunteer efforts of City staff who collected DVD's to send to deployed troops during this week’s session of Council, Wednesday at 2pm in Council Chambers, City Hall. Keith Maupin of the Yellow Ribbon Support Center will accept the DVD's on behalf of his organization, which has sponsored the drive.

The drive is part of the Project In Theater, a program which collects and sends DVD's to deployed military personnel to digital libraries on military posts overseas.  The offices of Council Members Cecil Thomas and Leslie Ghiz led the effort to honor the City’s Community Covenant with the U.S. Armed Forces.

Ratified by Council on May 18, 2001, the covenant is a part of the Army Community program which strives to improve the quality of life for our nation’s military personnel and their families.  It also serves as a pledge of support to the men and women of the U.S.

Chabot speaks for national "right to carry" gun law

WASHINGTON, DC (FOX19) - First District Ohio Representative Steve Chabot spoke Wednesday in favor of House Bill H.R. 822, a law that would extend concealed-carry reciprocity nationwide, for people traveling between states that permit concealed-carry of firearms.  Presently, states make individual deals to allow this.

The bill passed easily, 272 to 154, with nearly all Republicans and about a quarter of Democrats supporting it.  Locally, the New York Times reports that Mike Pence and Todd Young of Indiana, Chabot and Mike Turner of Ohio, and Geoff Davis of Kentucky voting yes, and Ohio's John Boehner and Jean Schmidt not voting.  All are Republicans.

Here's a transcript of Chabot's speech:

Stadium tax supporters rally for signature collectors

Stadium tax supporters rally for signature collectors

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - CLASSAction Cincinnati, a group that wants to put a new tax on stadium in the city charter will have a rally for their cause and to attract petition circulators on Sunday November 6 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the City Cellars parking lot at Race and 9th Streets Downtown.

The stadium leases ban the county from placing an additional tax on the teams or the spectators at stadium events, but when Hamilton County tax revenues started to fall behind the cost of paying stadium debts, County Commissioner Todd Portune, who was not on the commission when the deals were approved, came up with the idea of having the city impose a tax, since it is not a party to the stadium contracts.

The tax would be paid by the teams or their fans.  The  group is planning to circulate petitions outside polling places on Tuesday.
