YMCA Is Looking For Nominations Of Professionals Who Give Back

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati is looking for professionals who share its vision of nurturing the potential of young people, and promoting healthy living and social responsibility. Selected and sponsored by their companies to represent them, YMCA Achievers who will be honored at the 2012 Salute to YMCA Black & Latino Achievers Gala will also commit to volunteering a year to inspire students toward paths of success. Nomination sponsorships are being accepted through June 1, 2012.

The 2012 Salute to YMCA Black & Latino Achievers Gala will be held November 16, 2011 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Sharonville Convention Center. Rotary presents Cincinnati Police recognition awards Thursday

 

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Members of the Cincinnati Police Department will be honored by the Rotary Club of Cincinnati at its meeting Thursday April 19 in the Continental Room of the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza Hotel.

Rotary President Carl Kappes III will welcome Police Chief James E. Craig, who will introduce members of the Police Department to be honored for their outstanding efforts in the categories of Valor/Hero, Career Enhancement, Administrative Excellence and Superior Achievement.   Recipients of this year’s honors are Valor/Hero:  Police Officer Charles Knapp and Police Officer John Heine; Career Enhancement:  Sergeant Matthew Hammer; Administrative Excellence:  Sergeant Louise Shields; and Superior Achievement:  Lieutenant Stuart Koeppe.

FOX19 host joins YMCA in honoring 40 Youth With Character

They are 40 of Greater Cincinnati’s truly exemplary role models of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility. And they are ALL teenagers. On April 17, the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati and the community joined in celebrating them as YMCA Character Award recipients. The ‘Shine On’ YMCA Character Awards Event was sponsored by Tom Gill Chevrolet and FOX19, and was held at the School for Creative and Performing Arts. It was emceed by FOX19 Morning Xtra Host Tracey Johnson.

The YMCA Character Awards kicked off the Y's celebration of Global Youth Service Day, an international service event celebrating the service contributions of youth, in partnership with YSA, State Farm, and United Healthcare.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Lamont Taylor, Human Resources Manager for Frisch’s Restaurants Inc., was named to the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority’s board of trustees on March 20.   

In his role at Frisch’s Restaurants Inc., Taylor is responsible for employee relations and non-exempt recruitment for Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He had previously worked for Federal Express and the Greater Cincinnati Urban League.

Student wins Earth Day Logo Contest

DOWNTOWN CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Saint Ursula Academy senior Kerry Ulm was selected by the Greater Cincinnati Earth Coalition as the 2012 Cincinnati Earth Day Logo Design Contest winner.

Over 30 original earth-inspired entries were submitted from 7th-12th grade students in Cincinnati and N. Kentucky. After careful consideration of all the quality entries, Kerry Ulm’s use of color and creativity won her the coveted spot as Earth Day logo contest winner.

“Since we depend on the earth so much, it is important each year that we step back and reflect on how we are treating it,” said contest winner Kerry Ulm. “My inspiration for the logo was a flower spouting from the ground. The brown “e” [for the Earth] is the soil, the green letters are the stem and leaves, and the blue background is the sky,”

Myrna Ethridge's Philanthropy Has Very Personal Connection

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Myrna Ethridge is no stranger to philanthropy. She is a long time board member of the Winton Hills Medical Center Board and the YMCA Black & Latino Achievers Program, a program that honored her with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Now the retiree of United Parcel Service is raising money for a very personal cause – the Caring Voice Coalition, Inc. In 2000, Ethridge was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, a life threatening disease that requires expensive medication she wouldn’t be able to afford without a grant from the Coalition.

Cincinnati State culinary team wins Ohio title, heads to regional event

CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) - Fresh from a winning performance in the recent Ohio Cookoff competition, a student team from the Midwest Culinary Institute will head to Niagara Falls next month to compete at the 2012 American Culinary Federation’s Northeast Regional Conference.

During the Ohio Cookoff event held last month, the Cincinnati State team garnered a gold medal in the skills competition and a silver medal in the cooking competition, winning an overall national silver medal and the right to represent the state of Ohio at the ACF Regional Conference. There they will compete for the right to represent the Northeast Region for the national title at the ACF national convention, which will be held this July in Orlando.

The team is led by Master Chef John Kinsella and coached by MCI instructors George Zappas, Michael VanFleet, and Laura Horn.
