Years after the concept arose, first people moving to The Banks | News

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Sixteen years ago, the man who now owns the Reds proposed a mixed-use development including shops and apartments for the Cincinnati riverfront.
Tuesday, the first two people will move into an apartment complex called Current at the Banks.
Current at The Banks property managers and representatives of the Carter/Dawson development team will welcome Jeff Reinecke and Kate Heekin to the development at 10:00 a.m. and these first residents will cut a ceremonial ribbon that will give them access to the apartment.
Current at The Banks is a premier luxury apartment community located at The Banks. Current offers studio, one and two-bedroom apartments with more than 20 different floor plans, a variety of views, first-class amenities, and the ability to live in Cincinnati's newest district. More than 60 percent of the apartments are under lease so far. People will be moving in over the next several months.
The Banks isn't Cincinnati's biggest apartment complex, but it is the largest mixed-use development. It will eventually have 300 apartments, along with 96 thousand square feet of retail.
One locally owned food and drink establishment, the Holy Grail, is already open, with Johnny Rockets, Huey's Diner, which will be open 24-hours a day, Crepe Manou, a French bistro, The Wine Loft, which is a wine bar, and Toby Keith's "I Love This" Bar and Grill soon to come.
In 1995, Bob Castellini, not yet Reds owner but the largest riverfront property owner due to his produce company, proposed a development for the area. In 1996, the apartments were projected to be priced 800 dollars and up; even after all these years, the apartments at Current start at $840. By 1999, plans were under way to build the current stadiums, and the area in between was starting to be called The Banks. After years of financial negotiations between Cincinnati, Hamilton County, and private parties, financing hurdles, and a couple different developers, the Banks broke ground three years ago this month.
