Hops Fest popping up soon for homebrewers

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Hops Fest will be held October 6 from 6-9 p.m. at the Civic Garden Center.

This is a second year celebrating the wonderful hop plant and learning from other homebrewers how to get that perfect batch from your own garden and kitchen.  This class is for beginners and experts alike to share their questions or tips and techniques.  They’ll mingle before and after the class, so arrive on time. 

There is a 6:30 pm panel, Intro to Home Brewing, and a 7:30 pm one, Homegrown Ingredients. 

The cost is free, but you're asked to register by calling 221-0981 x 18.  

The Civic Garden Center is at 2715 Reading Road in Avondale.

Kroger provides details, asks you to check for recalled beef products

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Kroger Co. stores in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas are asking customers to check their refrigerators and freezers for 5 lb. chub Kroger Ground Beef 73% Lean 27% Fat and Kroger Beef Patties with a "best before or freeze by" date of September 12, 2011. 

This ground beef is part of a recall announced by Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc. 

Kroger customers can visit www.kroger.com/recall for the list of products subject to the recall sold in Kroger’s family of stores. The Tyson website lists all of the affected products and retailers. 

Kroger has removed affected items from store shelves and initiated its customer recall notification system. Customers who may have purchased the affected products will receive register receipt messages and/or automated phone calls.

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - The Woodworking in America Show, sponsored by Cincinnati-based Popular Woodworking Magazine, is returning to the Northern Kentucky Convention Center on September 30th- October 1st from 9AM to 6PM, and will feature one of the biggest woodworking shows in the Tri-State area.

The Marketplace will include a phenomenal line-up of more than 50 top-name hand- and power-tool makers; hands-on demonstrations by woodworking experts from national manufacturers and renowned craftsmen including: Adam Cherubini, Roy Underhill, Glen D.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Huntington Bank joins the financing partners responsible for the completion of the Over-the-Rhine affordable rental housing development Friars’ Court on Friday, September 16. The program will begin at 10 a.m. at 1641 Vine Street, Cincinnati.

The Friars’ Court development creates 25 newly rehabilitated, modern apartments for income-eligible residents, replacing 39 out-of-date units. Funding is made possible by:

 

•     Huntington Bank and Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati

•     City of Cincinnati

•     Cornerstone Community Loan Fund

•     Franciscan Friars, Province of St. John the Baptist

The project is sponsored by Cornerstone Corporation for Shared Equity.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Cincinnati Fire Department’s (CFD) Safe Summer Nights Program reaches out to more neighborhoods in September. The Program ends September 29th.

For the last twelve years, CFD has provided a Safe Summer Nights Program to educate, distribute and install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms within all Cincinnati neighborhoods.

The Safe Summer Nights Program has been sustained through the generous support of the American Red Cross, State Farm Insurance and a Federal Fire Prevention & Safety Grant.

GROUPON picks Civic Garden Center as first for new project in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - GROUPON has selected the Civic Garden Center (http://www.civicgardencenter.org/) to be the first non-profit in their Cincinnati market to benefit from their G-Team program.

Simply put, GROUPON subscribers will be given the option this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to donate on line to the Civic Garden Center to help them buy dirt for neighborhood gardens.  If the threshold of 33 donations of $10 each is reached, the CGC will get the funds immediately.  It is a quick and simple way for GROUPON to partner with a well respected nonprofit to help them raise funds for a very worthy cause.

"We are thrilled that GROUPON has selected us as their first G-Team beneficiary here in Cincinnati," said Vickie Ciotti, Executive Director of the Civic Garden Center.  "We have a waiting list for new neighborhood gardens and all we need is the money to buy more dirt."

Public hearings on Duke Energy rate plan begin next week

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Duke Energy Ohio customers will have their chance beginning next week to testify during local public hearing regarding the utility’s proposed rate plan.

The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) says Duke customers that the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) will hold two public hearings August 30 and two public hearings the week of September 4 to share their opinions of Duke’s nearly 10-year rate plan proposal and the effects it would have on their monthly budgets.
