Hispanic Health Fair to be Held in Erlanger

PARK HILLS, KY(FOX19) -- For the 12th year in a row, the North Central Area Health Education Center (NC AHEC) will host a Hispanic Health Fair for the Hispanic/Latino population of northern Kentucky. 

This year’s fair will be held at the Marydale Catholic Center in Erlanger on Sunday, October 16, from 1- 4 p.m. The health fair is held in collaboration with the Centro de Amistad and Cristo Rey, the Hispanic parish in Erlanger. Over 300 participants are expected at the health fair.

The health fair will feature free screening tests for diabetes and cholesterol, as well as blood pressure, dental, vision and hearing screening.

Undy 5000 racers get free pair of shorts Saturday

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Undy 5000 5K Run/Walk returns to Cincinnati second year Downtown at Great American Ballpark. 

The event will help bring greater awareness to colon cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. The Colon Cancer Alliance, the nation’s largest and oldest patient advocacy organization dedicated to ending the suffering caused by colon cancer, hosts the event.  The Undy 5000 will be held in 12 cities across the country this year to educate the public about colon cancer, promote screenings and encourage people to talk about the disease. 

Instead of raceday T-shirts, all registered participants receive a commemorative pair of Undy 5000 boxers. In addition to the 5K, there is a 1-mile fun run. This event also raises funds to support and build the CCA’s national and local patient support and innovative public awareness programs.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Cris Collinsworth ProScan Fund is hosting THE PINK PARTY luncheon Thursday (October 6) in celebration of the 10th Annual Pink Ribbon Luncheon. Commemorating ten years of support to local women, the Pink Ribbon Luncheon is a yearly fundraiser that supports the organization’s Pink Ribbon Programs. Held at the Duke Energy Convention Center, the Pink Ribbon Luncheon is one of the largest afternoon fundraising events in the region. 

The Pink Ribbon will welcome this year’s guest speaker, best-selling author, film director, screenwriter, and journalist, Nora Ephron. A triple Academy Award nominee for Writing Original Screenplay and one of “The 25 Most Powerful Women in America” named by Biography Magazine, Ephron is best known for some of the most famous romantic comedies, including Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail, and Julie and Julia.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Physicians at The Carl and Edyth Lindner Center for Research and Education at The Christ Hospital in Mt. Auburn have treated the first patient in the state of Ohio with the Moxy™ Drug Coated Balloon as part of LEVANT 2, a global, multi-center, randomized clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of this device for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Monica Hunter, M.D., interventional cardiologist at The Christ Hospital and principal investigator at the Lindner Research Center, performed the case. The patient is doing well and has been discharged home.

LEVANT 2, sponsored by medical device manufacturer Lutonix, Inc., is the first drug-coated balloon pivotal trial to gain approval by the Food and Drug Administration.

Health district trying new approach to promote healthy habits

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - On Thursday, October 6, WeTHRIVE! will unveil an interactive marketing piece at 120 East 4th Street in the Mercantile Building in downtown Cincinnati and we'd love for you to be there. The event goes from 11am - 2pm and representatives of Hamilton County Public Health will be available to discuss the project, and the need for an increase in healthier options in our communities. 

You'll be encouraged to interact with the display, also known as Digital-Out-Of Home (DOOH) which is divided into two components: on one side there is a quiz where the participant chooses which answer is the healthier option; and on the other side, rich animated graphics are displayed which the participant can interact with. 

The purpose of the interactive marketing piece is to highlight four distinct areas: access to healthy food, increased physical activity, access to safe places to play, and access to community gardens. WeTHRIVE!

Kids football team raises breast cancer awareness

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The West End Wildcats, part of the LeBlond Boys and Girls Club in Over the Rhine, will be going "pink" the entire month of October to help raise breast cancer awareness.

Although the players are only 9 & 10 yrs old, Coach Brian Westbrook felt it was important to raise awareness among his young players. 

"So many of us have had someone in our lives who has fought or is fighting breast cancer. We felt this was a perfect opportunity to show them that they are not helpless when it comes to supporting someone who is fighting for their lives. There is power and healing in love and support".

Players will be wearing pink socks, breast cancer awareness pins, and different accessories from gloves, mouthpieces, and wristbands to show their support.
