Local schools to participate in 2013 Kids Safety Fair

The 2013 Kids’ Safety Fair is happening Tuesday, May 21st at Yeatman’s cove from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Cincinnati Fire Department and State Farm Insurance along with several other Fire and Police departments.

Children will be educated on fire safety, the hazard of carbon monoxide, water safety and bike safety. State Farm is handing out finger print child ID books as well. Students will explore the Safety Awareness & Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) House, watch puppet shows, see clowns, and tour various safety vehicles throughout the day.

“We are delighted to partner with State Farm Insurance – whose sponsorship has enabled the Cincinnati Fire Department to bring this event to Cincinnati. This type of direct safety education to children is critical to our mission,” stated Fire Chief Richard Braun.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A summer full of family-friendly activities kicks off Friday at Smale Riverfront Park.

The first movie night of the season featuring Wreck It Ralph begins at 7pm with performances and activities featuring the Cincinnati Circus Company.

Wreck It Ralph, starts at 9pm with free popcorn for all - just bring a blanket and relax and enjoy!

Parking for all events is available in the Central Riverfront Garage located directly beneath the Schmidlapp Event Lawn in Smale Riverfront Park.

Annual OTR 5K run and summer celebration being held Saturday

OVER-THE-RHINE, OH (FOX19) - The annual OTR 5K race kicks off on Saturday, May 18 at 10am.

Established in 2007, the “OTR 5K Run & Walk” serves to both highlight successes in the community and raise funds for the Over-the-Rhine Chamber of Commerce. This year’s race starts and finishes in Washington Park. Race to compete, or make the 2013 OTR 5K Run & Walk a family affair. Dogs and strollers are welcome. This year’s event features a children’s race, with varying age groups, and prizes.

Along with the race, a summer celebration is being held in Washington Park from 10am - 4pm.

The celebration will include, live music, an expanded fine art show, the City Flea, food, adult beverages, vendors, kids’ activities, and entertainment. Live bands lined up include; The Cincy Brass, DAAP Girls, Decker, Baoku & the Image Afro-Beat Band, The Tillers and Mia Carruthers.

Dedication ceremony for Duke Energy Garden at Smale Riverfront Park

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19)  - A dedication ceremony is being held on Monday at 10:30am for the new Duke Energy Garden at Smale Riverfront Park.

this is a free public event located adjacent to—and east of— the park’s Main Street Fountain and Plaza.

In addition to lush gardens, large trees, walking paths and granite seat walls, the Duke Energy Garden features oversized family-sized porch swings—suspended from undulating pergolas—that will offer visitors a front row seat to the passing river traffic.

The swings provide an unobstructed view of the Ohio River and the Kentucky shoreline.

Teen financial literacy focus of summer workshops at Public Library

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County was one of 14 public libraries nationwide chosen through a competitive process to win a grant to fund “Smart investing@your library®” teen workshops at selected branch locations.

The $57,853 grant was awarded from the American Library Association (ALA) in partnership with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation. The Library will work with The Ohio State University Extension Office to develop and present the workshops, which were created to improve teen financial literacy.

“It’s an honor to be selected for this generous grant from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. We’re excited to deliver information that helps teenagers build a brighter financial future,” said Kimber L. Fender, the Eva Jane Romaine Coombe Director of the Library.
