U.S. Bank Tower awarded 'Energy Star' certification

CINCINNATI,OH (FOX19) - The U.S. Bank Tower in Cincinnati has been awarded the ENERGY STAR® by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its overall energy efficiency. It represents the seventh U.S. Bank-owned building to gain the certification since the start of 2012.

U.S. Bank made significant energy efficiency improvements to the 617,000 square foot building in recent years, including upgrading its energy management system (EMS) and replacing its chiller with a plate frame heat exchanger. The exchanger allows the building to save energy by cooling other machines with outside air when the temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

These savings resulted from the Library’s participation in Duke Energy’s SmartBuilding Advantage ® program. This program used building energy usage interval data and on-site assessments to identify and analyze energy efficiency opportunities at the Main Library. Following program recommendations, the Library replaced T12 lights with T8 lights and implemented improvements to its boiler plant in order to generate the highest energy savings in the shortest amount of time for the lowest cost.

Cincinnati becomes first Ohio city to ban injection wells

Cincinnati becomes first Ohio city to ban injection wells

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Submitted by Alison Auciello

Following Wednesday's unanimous vote by the Cincinnati City Council to ban injection wells associated with the disposal of waste from hydraulic fracturing, the citizen’s advocacy coalition Southwest Ohio No Frack Forum called on the state legislature to protect Ohio residents and their natural resources by banning all fracking-related activity throughout the state.

Fracking is an unconventional natural gas drilling method that involves pumping millions of gallons of water, silica sand and as many as 750 chemicals into the earth to release natural gas from hard rock formations. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) expects to permit over 2,250 fracking wells by 2015, which would create billions of gallons of fracking waste. Though local geologists claim that Cincinnati is not a favorable location for fracking, the shallow layer of sandstone makes it a desirable site for waste injection.
