Two ArtWorks murals added in Downtown Cincinnati | Arts & Culture
DOWNTOWN CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Artists are hard at work on two new ArtWorks murals in Downtown Cincinnati. One of the large scale art pieces is the largest to date according to ArtWorks.
The largest is the one created in partnership with Charley Harper Art Studio and Buschle + Fairbanks, Inc. Spanning an impressive 4,700 square feet and located at the corner of Walnut and Court Streets, the mural is a replica of “Homecoming (Bluebirds)”, an original design by the late and famed Cincinnati artist, Charley Harper. The energetic piece, chosen from thousands of Charley Harper designs, is being brought to life by Project Manager Jenny Ustick with the help of three Teaching Artists and twelve young Apprentice Artists, ages 14-21.
Ustick added, “So many people know and love Harper’s work, and the feedback and words of support from the passing public show it… The symmetry and minimalism not only suit the building itself, but the cool palette and large fields of color on such a large surface bring a bit of serenity to a very busy intersection, and to many viewers high above the street.”
The other mural is a piece sponsored by Kroger, and is being painted on the side of their headquarters on the East Central Parkway facing wall. The mural design, created and led by Jonathan Queen, is a visual representation of healthy eating and the abundance of life, and is meant to pay homage to Kroger’s roots and dedication to providing fresh produce to its customers. Queen stated, “This is my first time painting on such a monumental scale and it is an honor to have my design chosen for the corporate headquarters of such an important company… It's exciting to think that this public painting will be on display to the Cincinnati community for decades.” In addition to Queen, two Teaching Artists and twelve student Apprentice Artists are helping to create the larger-than-life display of fresh fruit and vegetables that seemingly spill out of the wall.
