New purple bench at Purple People bridge

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19)- There's a new purple bench on the Ohio side of the Purple People Bridge, thanks to one of Cincinnati's sister cities.

The bench was unveiled  by New Taipai City. There are also flags atop the purple poles at the bridge from New Taipai, Taiwan; Mysore, India; Gifu, Japan; Kharkiv, Ukraine; Nancy, France; Munich Germany; Liuzhou, China and Harare Zimbabwe.

Sister city information will be added to the Purple People Bridge kiosk.

Mobile food trucks now allowed in Washington Park

OVER THE RHINE, OH (FOX19)- Mobile food trucks are now allowed in Washington Park.

About a dozen trucks lined up on Friday to dedicate the new mobile food vending zone.

Council member Laure Quinlivan created Cincinnati's Mobile Food Vending program in 2010. Last year, she expanded the program to Fountain Square and the Purple People Bridge, and this year to Washington Park and Over the Rhine.

"We continue to receive a tremendous amount of positive
feedback from citizens and vendors who love the healthy, affordable food
choices offered by mobile vendors," says Council Member Laure Quinlivan.

The
OTR vending spot is on 12th Street, near Clay and is open to food
trucks from 6 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.  The Washington Park zone is open to trucks
from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Annual OTR 5K run and summer celebration being held Saturday

OVER-THE-RHINE, OH (FOX19) - The annual OTR 5K race kicks off on Saturday, May 18 at 10am.

Established in 2007, the “OTR 5K Run & Walk” serves to both highlight successes in the community and raise funds for the Over-the-Rhine Chamber of Commerce. This year’s race starts and finishes in Washington Park. Race to compete, or make the 2013 OTR 5K Run & Walk a family affair. Dogs and strollers are welcome. This year’s event features a children’s race, with varying age groups, and prizes.

Along with the race, a summer celebration is being held in Washington Park from 10am - 4pm.

The celebration will include, live music, an expanded fine art show, the City Flea, food, adult beverages, vendors, kids’ activities, and entertainment. Live bands lined up include; The Cincy Brass, DAAP Girls, Decker, Baoku & the Image Afro-Beat Band, The Tillers and Mia Carruthers.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - From nature preserves and parkways, to regional and neighborhood parks, Cincinnati has a long and proud history of enhancing the quality of life through outdoor recreation. In keeping with this tradition, Cincinnati Parks, in partnership with ArtWorks and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, is gathering community input on the design of a new carousel to be built at Smale Riverfront Park.

Through May 30, the Main Library is displaying selections from its historic postcard collection in A Place of Beauty, Health and Play: A History of Cincinnati Parks. This display features more than 60 images of 17 parks, including Ault, Eden, Lincoln, Mount Echo and Washington parks.   Images from the display can be viewed at http://cinlib.org/YIsCAq.

Crews battle electrical fire in downtown building

The fire was reported in the 300 block of W. 3rd Street around 4 p.m.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19)- Emergency crews were called to a reported electrical fire at a downtown office building on Thursday.

It happened in the 300 block of W. 3rd Street around 4 p.m. Officials on scene tell FOX19 the fire is believed to have started in the basement level after a transformer explosion.

The office and several other nearby buildings were evacuated, as a result.

Fire officials say someone was rescued from the elevator after the power was cut.

Two firefighters were taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation. A civilian was treated and transported to the hospital, but that person's condition is not being released.

Black smoke was seen coming out of sewers, including one at 5th Street and Central Avenue. Authorities believe this was caused by the transformer explosion at W. 3rd and Plum.

Qualls, Seelbach present budget plan for less layoffs

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19)- The first of three public hearings was held Thursday evening on Cincinnati's budget.

The budget includes layoffs to several city workers, including police officers and firefighters. Mayor Mark Mallory submitted his changes to the city manager's budget on Wednesday.

Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls and Council member Chris Seelbach have co-sponsored a motion that would eliminate all firefighter layoffs and reduce police layoffs to 25 by restoring 24 police officer positions in the fiscal year 2014 budget. The motion was introduced at Thursday's meeting.

The motion would make the following changes to the budget proposed by the manager, resulting in a savings of $607,000:
